Special Events

Butterfly Release
The Fairfax Chapter holds an annual Mother’s Day Butterfly Release (second Sunday in May) in honor and memory of our children.  The event is held on the grounds of Historic St. Mary’s Church mid-afternoon and usually lasts 30-45 minutes.  The event includes special poems and readings.  Butterflies are pre-ordered by parents and families.  As each child’s name is called, the beautiful creatures emerge from their darkness into the brilliant light of the sky.  This event is very popular and is long remembered as a moving tribute to our children.

As you release this butterfly
in memory of me,
Know that I am with you
and will always be.

Candle Lighting Service
The Compassionate Friends holds an annual Worldwide Candle Lighting Service (second Sunday in December).  This event is held around the globe at 7:00 p.m. in each time zone so that a continuous light shines in memory of all deceased children.  Through local TCF Chapters, parents and families gather to honor their child through readings, music and candle lighting. The Fairfax Chapter will hold a Candle Lighting Service at St. Mary’s Historic Church this December.

May the light of their spirit
burn brightly within our hearts.

Walk to Remember
The Compassionate Friends holds an annual Walk to Remember at the TCF National Conference (usually held in July).  Approximately 1,500 people participate in this walk in honor of their child, sibling or grandchild.  They also carry the names of those children whose parents can’t attend the conference but would like their child remembered.  Local TCF Chapters  sponsor and hold local Walks to Remember, usually on the same day as the National Conference Walk.

National  Conference
The Compassionate Friends National Conference is held annually (usually in July) and rotates to different states throughout the US.  Over one hundred workshops on a variety of topics dealing with grief and healing are available.  Sharing sessions and bonding with new friends is an important part of the conference.  Keynote speakers of national prominence also share their own stories and deliver messages of hope.

Other Special Events are often held throughout the year such as Memorial Events, Regional Conferences, etc. and more are always being planned. Fairfax Chapter Members receive email notices and information on all meetings and events.
